The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin offers a wide variety of material for the study of African American life, history, and culture in Texas. As with all ethnic groups, the study of African Americans in Texas can be approached from many perspectives—through the use of monographs, scholarly articles, photographs, music, dissertations and theses, newspapers, the personal papers of individuals, and business and governmental records. This subject bibliography will familiarize researchers with the many resources relating to African Americans in Texas available at the Briscoe Center.
For the purposes of this selection, scope was limited mainly to African Americans in the state of Texas. Other materials within the Briscoe Center—the Natchez Trace Collection and the Field Foundation Archives to name only two—supplement the following entries and expand the national scope.
