From 2001-2003, photojournalist Melina Mara of The Washington Post conducted a pioneering project with the Briscoe Center to document the growing contribution of women in the U.S. Senate. She photographed the day-to-day work and lives of the fourteen women then serving in the Senate. Mara’s photographs were featured in a traveling exhibition produced by the Center that opened at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. in 2003 followed by a national tour. In 2005, Mara’s photographs were published in the book Changing the Face of Power: Women in the U.S. Senate part of the Briscoe Center’s series at the University of Texas Press. The photographs are available in the archives for research and teaching.
