Drawn from one of the top three collections in the world documenting the history of the American South, this exhibit revealed the Southern American story across the 19th century—a time of great transformation for the people, government, and ways of life in the region. With special emphasis on slavery, the cotton economy, and the Civil War, the documents and objects presented here shed light on the individual voices and histories of those who lived and worked in the South, including enslaved people, soldiers, homemakers, planters, jurists, and free people of color.
