Iconic photography is much more than a record of factual events—it is a powerful tool that allows us to create a cohesive narrative out of the complicated events of our shared history. Etched Memory: Icons of American Photography contained ten iconic photographs from the Briscoe Center’s collections that help define the American visual memory of the last 70 years, including Joe Rosenthal’s unforgettable photograph of U.S. Marines raising an American flag on Iwo Jima, Bob Jackson’s image of Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald, and Thomas Franklin’s indelible image of Ground Zero.(Photograph of Flag Raising on Iwo Jima, 02/23/1945, by Joe Rosenthal.)
