The center’s Exhibit Hall showcased the work of photographer R. C. Hickman (1918–2007) to commemorate the centenary of Hickman’s birth and also the 25th anniversary of the Briscoe Center’s book Behold the People: R. C. Hickman’s Photographs of Black Dallas, 1949–1961. A companion exhibit was also displayed at Dallas City Hall. Honing his craft as an army photographer during World War II, Hickman produced thousands of images that documented life in the African American community of Dallas, Texas during the 1950s.
