Author Don Carleton discusses Baker’s business career and lifelong relationship with the University of Texas and explores Baker’s family, church, and civic responsibilities in Houston. Baker’s legal knowledge and administrative skill were instrumental to the success of the Humble Oil & Refining Company. As Humble was a major subsidiary of the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, Baker also played an influential role in the history of the company that would eventually become the ExxonMobil Corporation. He was a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Texas and a generous donor to his alma mater, so this publication also celebrates his many contributions to the university.
