Briscoe Center Announces 2014 Quilt Exhibit

The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History is pleased to announce the quilt exhibit Red and White and a Bit of Another Color. The exhibit will be on display from February 10–23 at the Winedale Historical Complex, a division of the Briscoe Center located in Round Top, Texas.
Red and White showcases this crisp color combination across a range of quilts, embroidered redwork, study textiles, and quilt blocks. With one notable exception, all the textiles on display are both red and white, though, occasionally, a bit of another color (or two) also appears!
“Red and white quilts have been made since the 1840s,” said Kate Adams, quilt curator at the Briscoe Center. “The popularity of these two-color quilts and other domestic textiles can be attributed in part to the color fastness of Turkey red cotton and also to the turn-of-the-century popularity of red-on-white outline embroidery known as redwork.”
Selections span the period from the 1800s to the 1930s. The display includes Burgoyne Surrounded, a quilt possibly made by slaves on a Louisiana plantation, a doll quilt and pillow made from redwork squares, a boudoir cape decorated with redwork, and a 19th-century red-on-white school sampler.
“Some of the quilts and most of the redwork examples have never before been publicly displayed,” said Adams. “They provide an opportunity to view and examine the longstanding popularity of combining red and white in quiltmaking, embroidery, and fabric designs.”
The Winedale Quilt Collection is a scholarly resource that supports the study of quilts and their history. Its mission is to collect, preserve, and provide access to American quilts and quilt history materials documenting the role of quilts in American culture. The quilts currently on display joined the collection as part of donations assembled by Joyce Gross, Kathleen McCrady, and Sherry Cook.
