WILLIAM AND MADELINE SMITH RESEARCH TRAVEL AWARD
The Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin announces the 2008–09 William and Madeline Smith Research Travel Award. Five awards up to $1,000.00 each will be given for use beginning September 1, 2008. The research must be completed by August 31, 2009.
Through the Smith Travel Award, the Center for American History will assist masters, doctoral, and post-doctoral students with costs associated with travel to Austin, Texas. The award is intended for students who need to conduct in-depth research in the holdings of the Center and who reside outside of the Austin metropolitan area.
Each applicant should mail a completed application form along with a copy of the applicant’s curriculum vitae, and a 250–500 word summary of the applicant’s research project. The summary should provide a research plan that includes details on collections the applicant expects to use. In addition, two letters of recommendation must be written and sent directly to the Center by individuals suitably qualified to remark on the applicant’s proposed research and academic performance.
Applicants will not be considered for the award until all application components have been received. If a self-addressed, stamped postcard is included in the application, the Center will provide notification that the application is complete. Applications must be postmarked by
June 15, 2008. The Center will announce the awards by letter on or before August 1, 2008.

The Research and Collections Division is located in Sid Richardson Hall Unit 2, on the main campus of The University of Texas at Austin. Our location in Sid Richardson Hall is the Center’s main research facility and the repository for the vast majority of the Center’s book, manuscript, map, newspaper, photographic, sound, and ephemera collections.
