The Briscoe Center for American History and The Bugle Boy Foundation present documentary film "When I Rise"

LA GRANGE, Texas–"When I Rise," a documentary film about Barbara Smith Conrad, an opera singer who overcame racial discrimination to achieve international stardom, will be presented free of charge to the La Grange, Texas community, Sunday, September 26, 2010. The film screening will occur at 2:30 p.m. at the Bugle Boy, 1051 N. Jefferson Street (HWY 77) in La Grange.
"When I Rise" is the powerful story of Conrad, a gifted University of Texas music student who became a target of racial discrimination in the late 1950s and ultimately ascended to the heights of international opera. Produced by the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin, "When I Rise" is an Alpheus Media Production, in association with Allentown Productions. The film was directed by award-winning Austin filmmaker Mat Hames. Producers include Academy Award-winner James Moll and award-winning filmmaker Michael Rosen.

"When I Rise" is an official selection of the 2010 South By Southwest Film Festival (Austin), the 2010 Dallas International Film Festival, the 2010 Hot Docs festival (Toronto), the 2010 Indianapolis Film Fest, and the 2010 New York City International Film Festival. The film received the Audience Choice Award for feature film and the Black Expression Award from the 2010 Indianapolis Film Festival.
