EVENT: Memorial Service for Texas Gov. Dolph Briscoe Jr.

BACKGROUND:
A memorial service for the late Texas Gov. Dolph Briscoe Jr. will be held Aug. 1, at 1 p.m. in the Texas Senate Chamber at the Texas State Capitol in Austin. The memorial service is open to the public.
President George W. Bush, Gov. William Clements, and Gov. Mark White will compose the memorial committee.
Sen. John Montford will give the words of welcome and Gov. Rick Perry, Gov. Mark White, and Jess Hay will give the remembrances. The Rev. Michael Marsh of St. Philips Episcopal Church, Uvalde, will give the homily. Dr. Don Carleton, Gov. Briscoe’s historian and executive director of the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, will also make remarks. The University of Texas Trombone Choir will provide a musical tribute.
A reception will be held following the memorial service in the Texas lieutenant governor’s public reception room, second floor of the State Capitol.
Recently implemented security measures in the Capitol will require everyone entering the Capitol to go through a security procedure, which can be time-consuming with large crowds.
Public parking is available at the Capitol Visitors Parking Garage, east of the Capitol at 12th Street and Trinity. Vehicles can enter the garage from either 12th Street or 13th Street.
