Briscoe Center to Participate in Farenthold Conference

Farenthold’s career will inspire panels and keynotes as conferees reflect on the issues that she dedicated her life to from both a historical and contemporary perspective. The conference marks the culmination of a three-year project to digitize Farenthold’s archival papers, which are housed at the Briscoe Center. The project was funded with support from the Creekmore and Adele Fath Charitable Foundation.
The conference begins on Thursday with an interview of Sissy Farenthold by Evan Smith, editor in chief of the Texas Tribune. Later that day, Briscoe Center Executive Director Don Carleton will join Rapoport Center Co-Director Karen Engle for a discussion on the legacy of Farenthold and the importance of her now-digitized archival papers.
Friday will be characterized by panel discussions between scholars, legislators, advocates, and journalists. The panels are focused around documents and issues inspired by the Farenthold papers. Panels will focus on reproductive rights and gay rights; peace, disarmament, and the international women’s movement; and Texas electoral politics and the vocal minority. The conference will also include the presentation of interesting archival video footage and a new online exhibit.
