Briscoe Center Hosts Book Launch Event for The House Will Come to Order
The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History will hold a book launch for its newest book, The House Will Come to Order: How the Texas Speaker Became a Power in State and National Politics. The event takes place on March 23, 2010, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Scholz Beer Garten.
Co-authors Dr. Patrick L. Cox and Dr. Michael Phillips will be on hand to sign this widely anticipated publication, which is published by the University of Texas Press and is based on the Briscoe Center’s extensive collection of oral histories with former Texas Speakers.
The House Will Come to Order charts the evolution of the Speaker’s role from a relatively obscure office to one of the most powerful in the state. In a state assumed to have a constitutionally weak governor, the Speaker of the Texas House wields enormous power, with the ability to almost single-handedly dictate the legislative agenda. This fascinating book, drawn from the Briscoe Center’s oral history project on the former Speakers, is the story of transition, modernization, and power struggles.
Books will be available for purchase at the event. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted. A cash bar and light appetizers will be provided for your refreshment.
