Briscoe Center Hosts 2009 Winedale Symposium on Texas Furniture

Austin, Texas – Texas Furniture: New Finds, New Conclusions, this year’s Winedale Spring Symposium, will be held on April 4, 2009. The symposium is sponsored by the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin.

The 2009 Winedale Symposium will explore new discoveries in 19th-century handmade Texas furniture, brought to light by scholars Lonn Taylor and David Warren through research conducted for a new edition of the 1975 classic, Texas Furniture: The Cabinetmakers and Their Work, 1840-1880. Taylor and Warren authored the first edition, which is universally recognized as the authoritative publication on the subject. The Briscoe Center is honored to work with Taylor and Warren on the long-awaited sequel to the original Texas Furniture book and privileged to offer a preview of their findings during the 2009 Winedale Symposium.
The Briscoe Center is also delighted to welcome Dr. Michaele Haynes, curator of the Witte Museum, to this year’s symposium. Dr. Haynes is a cultural anthropologist who has studied Texas furniture makers, as well as the people who used the furniture in everyday life and the collectors who foresaw the historic significance of handmade Texas furniture. She will focus on the Witte Museum’s Texas furniture collection and its donors, particularly Ted James, who pioneered the collection of Texas furniture.
The daylong symposium will include tours of Winedale’s historic buildings and extensive collection of Texas furniture, and a closing reception.
