This year’s annual Winedale quilt exhibition showcases thirteen quilt treasures from the Briscoe Center’s Winedale Quilt Collection. Quilts on display date from the 1840s to 1987 and include the heavily embellished Crazy Quilt with Ruffle, made in Palestine, Texas around 1888, and Tiger Lily (1940), a masterpiece by Bertha Stenge, known as “Chicago’s Quilting Queen.”
The quilts exhibited here, plus more than one hundred others, are described and pictured through essays and photographs in Comfort and Glory: Two Centuries of American Quilts from the Briscoe Center, Katherine Jean Adams, formerly the Briscoe Center’s Quilt Curator. Published by the Briscoe Center and the University of Texas Press, Comfort and Glory is the first book-length publication to focus exclusively on the Winedale Quilt Collection, a premier scholarly resource for the study of American quilts and their history.
