Join us for Red and White and a Bit of Another Color, the Briscoe Center’s annual quilt exhibit. The Briscoe Center’s display will feature examples of 19th and 20th-century red-and-white quilts and redwork bedcovers from its Winedale Quilt Collection.

This exhibition opens in July at the Bonham Quilt Hop at the Bonham Visitor’s Center and at the Briscoe Center’s Sam Rayburn Museum.

In February 2014, an expanded version of this exhibit will be on view in at the Briscoe Center’s Winedale Historical Complex, located four miles northeast of Round Top at 3738 FM 2712 (off FM 1457).

Bonham Quilt Hop Celebrates the Art and Tradition of Quilting

BONHAM, Texas — The Briscoe Center’s Sam Rayburn Museum will host the exhibit “Threads of Tradition” as part of Bonham’s Third Annual Quilt Hop, Saturday, July 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This year’s hop takes place at eight different locations around town including the Bonham Visitor Center, Fannin County Museum of History, Bonham Public Library, Sam Rayburn House Museum, Fannin County Historical Commission, Creative Arts Center, and the Sam Rayburn Museum.

The Sam Rayburn Museum and the Bonham Visitor Center will co-host “Threads of Tradition,” which contrasts quilting traditions in the Amish and Mennonite communities. The Visitor Center display will showcase five Amish quilts dating from 1905 to 1983, all from the Briscoe Center’s Winedale Quilt Collection. The Rayburn Museum’s display will focus on the Mennonite quilting tradition, exhibiting both an historic and more modern Mennonite quilt as well as a set of hand-stitched “plain clothes.”

The Creative Art Center exhibit will spotlight quilts by pattern maker Shirley Fowlkes Stevenson. The gallery will feature sample quilts that Mrs. Stevenson made to market her quilt patterns at quilt shows all over the United States. There will also be many more of Shirley’s prize-winning quilts on display in the front two galleries.

The Fannin County Historical Commission and Fannin County Museum of History will display historical quilts made by people in Fannin County, or quilts brought to Fannin County by settlers as they moved into the area. The display at the Bonham Public Library will feature more modern quilts from the Fannin County community.

The Sam Rayburn House Museum will provide special quilt-themed tours of the newly refurbished Rayburn House, showcasing quilts from the Sam Bell Maxey House museum. Home of the Confederate general and two-term U.S. senator, the Maxey House hosted many distinguished guests and was regarded as the town social center.
