Briscoe Center Icons of Photography Exhibit Opens at LBJ Library

AUSTIN, Texas — “Etched Memory: Icons of American Photography,” an exhibit of selected photographs from the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin, will be on display at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum from Jan. 25 through March 25, 2012.
Iconic photography is much more than a record of factual events—it is a powerful tool that allows us to create a cohesive narrative out of the complicated events of our shared history. The exhibit contains ten iconic photographs from the Briscoe Center’s collections that help define the American visual memory of the last 70 years, including Joe Rosenthal’s unforgettable photograph of U.S. Marines raising an American flag on Iwo Jima, Bob Jackson’s image of Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald, and Thomas Franklin’s indelible image of Ground Zero.
