Briscoe Center Announces 2009–2010 William and Madeline Welder Smith Research Travel Award
The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin announces the 2009–10 William and Madeline Smith Research Travel Award. Five fellowships of at least $1,000.00 each will be given each year, and the aid may be used any time from September 1, 2009 to August 31, 2010.
Through the Smith Travel Award, the Briscoe Center will assist masters, doctoral, and post-doctoral students with costs associated with travel to Austin, Texas. The award is intended for students who need to conduct in-depth research in the holdings of the Briscoe Center and who reside outside of the Austin metropolitan area.
Each applicant should mail a completed application form (pdf) along with a copy of the applicant’s curriculum vitae, and a 250–500 word summary of the applicant’s research project. The summary should provide a research plan that includes details on collections the applicant expects to use. In addition, two letters of recommendation must be written and sent directly to the Briscoe Center by individuals suitably qualified to remark on the applicant’s proposed research and academic performance.
Applicants will not be considered for the award until all application components have been received. If a self-addressed, stamped postcard is included in the application, the Briscoe Center will provide notification that the application is complete. Applications must be postmarked by May 31, 2009. The Briscoe Center will announce the awards by letter on or before June 30, 2008.
