Round Top, Texas — Winedale, a division of the Center for American History, will host the exhibit Honoring Her Legacy: Kathleen McCrady’s Quilt History Collection, from February 16 – 29, 2008. The exhibit, open Wednesdays – Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., includes striking examples of Kathleen’s quiltmaking, as well as historic quilts and quilt history documentation from her collection.
An opening reception will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2008, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., where Kathleen McCrady will sign her book, My Journey with Quilts: Over 70 Years of Quiltmaking, 1932-2003. Kathleen will also present a quilt talk on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. The exhibit and events will take place at Winedale, and are free and open to the public.
“Quilting has always been in my life,” states Kathleen, a native Texan and a third-generation quilter who began working on quilts at age six, when she embroidered her name on a quilt block for her grandmother. Since that first quilt block, Kathleen has made more than 500 quilts, many of which have received public recognition through exhibitions, awards, and publications.
Kathleen has also been a significant force in Texas’s quilt community. She has taught quilting; worked as a quilt conservator, show judge, and as an appraiser; and was a founding member of the Austin Area Quilt Guild and a board member of the Texas Sesquicentennial Quilt Association. In 2002, she established the Kathleen H. McCrady Quilt History Collection at the Center for American History.
“We’re thrilled to have this exhibit celebrating Kathleen,” said Mary Evelynn Sorrell, assistant director for Winedale. “The exhibit, and her Quilt History Collection at the Center, are a recognition that her legacy extends beyond her collection to a lifetime of art, teaching, and sharing her love of quilts with others.”
