Upon his death on March 25, 2022, award-winning photojournalist Dirck Halstead was honored with tributes to his life and career in the international news media, the likes of which are normally reserved for heads of state. He was beloved by the journalism community as much for his insight, charm, and friendship as his ability to get the shot. His work documented powerful stories and images that not only delivered important news to the public, but also recorded history.
In 1995, Dirck donated his life’s work to the Briscoe Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin, where it is available for teaching and research. The Dirck Halstead Photographic Archive [https://txarchives.org/utcah/finding_aids/00311.xml] is a major part of the Briscoe Center’s Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Collection. In celebration of a remarkable man who was generous with his support of both student and professional photojournalists, the Briscoe Center seeks to honor Dirck’s last wish by establishing an internship in his name. But we need the help of his friends, colleagues, and students to do so.
I was fortunate to call Dirck a dear friend and colleague. With Dirck as a mentor, I learned what it takes to be a great photographer and a great newsperson. Now it is our turn to give back in memory of the man who helped so many throughout his career. I hope you will join me in honoring Dirck’s legacy by making a gift today.

· introduce interns to the practice of photographic archives management.
· help interns gain important pre-professional experience.
· and assist the Briscoe Center with preservation and access to the collections of photojournalists whose work is also at the center, many who were Dirck’s professional colleagues.

Before he died, my brother Dirck told me of his desire to keep his images and creativity alive for future generations by creating an internship in his name at the Briscoe Center for American History. I am committed to making his dream come true. Please help me fulfill Dirck’s last wish and fund the Dirck Halstead Internship in Photographic Archives.
