The Briscoe Center for American History’s Flash of Light, Wall of Fire Japanese Photographs Documenting the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has been selected for the 2021 San Antonio Book Festival.
The Flash of Light session takes place on April 10, 2021, at 4:00 p.m. and will feature a discussion between Don Carleton, Briscoe Center executive director, and Mark Updegrove, president and CEO of the LBJ Foundation. To register and for more information, visit the book festival website.
Flash of Light, Wall of Fire was also named one of the best photobooks of 2020 by Vogue Italia. According to Fred Ritchin, dean emeritus of the International Center of Photography, “It is a solemn, visceral reminder of what people are capable of doing to one another, and a plea for peace.”
Published by UT Press, the book features the work of twenty-three Japanese photographers who risked their lives to capture the devastation. A preface by Carleton, an essay by Michael B. Stoff, and an afterword by Japanese journalist Michiko Tanaka explore how the images were collected and preserved. The center’s Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Photographs Archive consists of more than eight hundred photographs, over one hundred of which are seen here for the first time in an English-language publication.
